Among the crowd were desperate civilians of all ages, including children and the elderly, many of whom had walked for kilometers carrying what little they could find. Residents described hunger as a constant struggle, accusing Israel of using starvation as a weapon through its ongoing blockade, which has left more than 2 million Gazans without reliable access to food, clean water, or medicine. Famine-linked death toll since October 2023 rose to 460 people, including 154 children, the Health Ministry said on Sunday, Oct. 5. Since March 2, Israeli authorities have completely closed all Gaza border crossings, pushing the territory’s 2.4 million population into famine. In August, the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared famine in Gaza City and warned it would spread to other areas of the territory. Over 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
