Storyline: China's Eastern Data-Western Computing Project drives social investment, green growth [Voice_over] Officials from China's National Data Administration say the country's Eastern Data Western Computing Program has recently raised more than 138 billion U.S. dollars in social investments. The program, launched in 2022, aims to integrate computing centers in western China, where sustainable energy is abundant, with the high demand for AI-powered data from locations in the country's urban east coast region. As part of the 14th Five-Year Plan, the project has established eight national computing hubs and ten data center clusters, spanning 14 provinces. It now supports around 80 percent of the country's intelligent computing capacity for industries including smart manufacturing and telemedicine. [Sound_bite] Zhao Xiaofang, Chief Engineer, Network Research Department, Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences: "The 'East Data West Computing' initiative integrates energy infrastructure with computing infrastructure, to ensure a sustainable supply of computing power and healthy development. It also creates new industries and opportunities for growth in the western region. " [Voice_over] The project is also making strides in sustainable energy use. In Qinghai, data centers use local solar energy in a pilot program that coordinates computing power and electricity. [Sound_bite] Li Hongqi, head of operations and maintenance, Sanjiangyuan National Big Data Base, China Unicom: "This new model of direct green electricity supply reduces energy consumption in our data centers by more than 20 percent compared with the past." [Voice_over] Today, China's total intelligent computing scale has reached 780,000 petaflops, ranking second in the world. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
