Storyline: China's 1st salt cavern gas storage boosts capacity by 60 pct [Voice_over] China's first salt cavern natural gas storage facility, "Jintan", has just completed its expansion capacity, officials from China Oil and Gas Piping Network Corp said recently. Located in east China's Jiangsu Province-the heart of the Yangtze River Delta- the salt cavern is a key pillar for regional energy supplies. Salt caverns have strong, impervious walls that prevent natural gas leakage making them well suited for storage purposes. To enlarge a salt cavern, water is pumped in to dissolve more of the salt walls, then pumped back out, leaving a bigger space to store the gas. The Jintan cavern has been expanded from 8.2 million cubic meters to 13.2 million cubic meters, which has increased its daily peak-shaving gas extraction capacity from 6 million cubic meters to 18.
