China: Drainage operations underway in flooded Xuwen after Typhoon Matmo moves away
Storyline: Drainage operations have begun on Monday in Xuwen County, Zhanjiang City in south China's Guangdong Province to rid local communities of floodwater unleashed Typhoon Matmo. Typhoon Matmo, the 21st named storm of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season, made landfall along the eastern coast of Xuwen around 14:50 on Sunday, according to Guangdong's meteorological service. The heavy rain and flooding caused by the typhoon inundated the basketball court and football field of a local elementary school, submerging several vehicles parked there on Sunday. By Monday, water levels had significantly decreased as firefighters ramped up their efforts to pump out the water and clear debris. On the same day, drainage work also took place in an underground parking lot of a local property for sale. As of 11:30 on Monday, the fire departments in Zhanjiang had received a total of 195 emergency calls related to the storm. In response to the widespread impact, about 6,000 people have been deployed across Guangdong to restore power supply in the province.
