Bridge collapses leaving drivers injured in the Philippines
An overloaded bridge collapsed in the Philippines today, leaving drivers injured
Three ten-wheeler trucks were crossing the 246 ft (75 m) Piggatan Bridge when the middle section suddenly folded in half in Cagayan province on October 6.
Footage shows the aftermath, with the massive trucks stranded on the twisted steel truss bridge.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said: 'It has been confirmed that the bridge collapsed along with several trailer trucks.' The agency has yet to release the official number of injured, but no deaths have been reported.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene to evacuate trapped drivers and passengers, while those injured were taken to hospitals in Alcala and Gattaran.
Firefighters also assisted in managing traffic and establishing alternate routes, as the bridge served as a vital connection between towns in the province.
The Piggatan Bridge is the second bridge to collapse in Cagayan this year. Investigations on the main cause of the collapse is ongoing.
The Philippines has long struggled with ageing infrastructure, with many roads and bridges falling short of safety standards. Ongoing issues within the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have seen private contractors linked to inflated costs and stolen funds, leaving projects unfinished or poorly built and raising safety concerns.
