United States - October 01, 2025 A Riviera Beach Police Captain is being hailed as a hero after preventing a woman from jumping off a bridge Wednesday evening. The entire incident was recorded on police body camera and shared by the Riviera Beach Police Department. At 6:14 p.m. on October 1, multiple 911 callers reported a woman threatening to jump. One caller pleaded with her, telling her she had more to live for and urging her not to jump. A bystander woman approached the woman on the rail and began talking to her as Captain Melvin Menard arrived on the opposite side. Menard climbed over a concrete barrier and carefully inched toward the woman. He was able to wrap his arms around her and calmly coax her to safety. The 58-year-old woman was then taken for evaluation under the Florida Mental Health Act, also known as the Baker Act. Chief Michael Coleman praised the actions of both the Samaritans and Captain Menard, stating that their efforts undoubtedly saved the woman’s life. The department is working to contact the Samaritans to recognize their selfless actions, highlighting the spirit of the Riviera Beach community.
