Los Angeles, United States - October 07, 2025 10/06/2025 06:00 pm GMT-0700 BURBANK, Calif. – The control tower at Hollywood Burbank Airport was unmanned Monday evening as air traffic controllers called out and failed to report for duty due to the ongoing government shutdown. The Federal Aviation Administration stated that operations were being handled remotely by Southern California TRACON in San Diego, which oversees approach and departure traffic for the region. Flights continued without major cancellations, although minor delays were reported. Officials indicated they were working to restore tower staffing by 10 p.m. The shutdown, which has entered its sixth day, is beginning to strain the aviation system as more controllers and security workers call out. The FAA has reported staffing slowdowns at several major airports, including those in Denver, Detroit, and Phoenix. Approximately 13,000 controllers and 61,000 TSA employees are still working without pay. Officials warn that if absences increase, passengers may experience longer lines, more delays, and potential cancellations in the days ahead.
