China: More young people committed to elderly care service in China
Storyline: More young people committed to elderly care service in China [Voice_over] China is hiring more young people to fill elderly care roles as the country contends with a rapidly aging population. According to recent data from the country's Ministry of Civil Affairs, by the end of 2023, China had 297 million people aged 60 and above, roughly 21 percent of its total population. At this center in Beijing, Feng, who's new to the job, says the field is much more than just providing care. [Sound_bite] Feng Zihan, staff, elderly care service center: "I found that elderly care is not a service but also includes elderly care finance, home-based elderly care and house reform for the elderly. I will try my best to do it." [Voice_over] The Human Resources director of another elderly care center in the city says more young people are willing to take health worker jobs thanks to their promotion and incentive system. [Sound_bite] Li Jin, HR director, elderly care service center: "This year we have recruited over 200 trainees. In our service center, almost 60 percent of health workers are young people." [Voice_over] Data from recruitment agencies shows that demand for health workers in elderly care service centers has gone up almost 40 percent from 2024. Earlier this year, China's state council released a set of guidelines to fully develop its elderly living and elderly care services sector by the year 2029.
