18 Dead After Bus Buried in Massive Landslide in Himachal’s Bilaspur District
Script:
A devastating landslide struck Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district late Tuesday evening, killing at least 18 people after a private bus was buried under tons of debris.
The bus, travelling from Haryana’s Rohtak to Ghumarwin with around 30 to 35 passengers, was hit by a massive landslide near the Bhallu Bridge in the Bhalughat area amid heavy rainfall. Local police said the entire hillside collapsed onto the moving bus, leaving little chance of survival for those trapped.
Rescue teams, assisted by JCB machines and locals, worked through the night to clear debris and pull out survivors. Three passengers, including children, were rescued and taken to a hospital in Berthin for treatment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy, announcing ₹2 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the PM National Relief Fund.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu called the incident “heartbreaking,” confirming that rescue efforts are underway on a war footing and that all resources have been deployed. Jhandutta MLA Jeet Ram Katwal also visited the site to oversee ongoing operations.
Video from the site showed rescuers battling heavy rain and unstable terrain as machinery cleared rubble from the buried bus.
