VARIOUS OF POLICE DETAINING AND ESCORTING PROTESTERS AWAYBERLIN, GERMANY - OCT. 7: Police detained several protesters during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in the German capital Berlin on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The protest was planned at Alexanderplatz to denounce Israel’s attacks on Gaza but was banned by authorities. Despite the ban, many people gathered at the square, where police blocked the area and prevented the rally. Protesters later moved to Neptunbrunnen Square, chanting slogans in support of Palestine and holding banners reading “There is blood on your hands.” Police announced that the demonstration was unauthorized and called on participants to disperse. When the crowd did not leave, officers surrounded the area and detained several protesters for identity checks. The situation remained mostly calm, and police presence in the area continued as a precaution. Israeli naval forces attacked and seized vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla last week, detaining more than 470 activists from over 50 countries. The flotilla was trying to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel’s blockade of the enclave. Israel has maintained the blockade of Gaza, home to nearly 2.4 million people, for almost 18 years. Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have killed more than 67,000 Palestinians in Gaza, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave all but uninhabitable, with widespread starvation and the spread of disease.
