ASSAD ATIYYAH AN NAWAJEHA, NEONATAL CLINIC DOCTOR, SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Arabic)GAZA, PALESTINE - OCTOBER 07: Forced migration from northern Gaza due to Israeli attacks has overwhelmed the neonatal unit at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, where a severe shortage of medicine has led to rising infant deaths. The influx of displaced people has placed immense pressure on hospitals already suffering from shortages of medical supplies caused by Israel’s blockade, sharply reducing survival chances for patients, especially newborns. Dr. Dalia Ahmad, a physician in the hospital’s neonatal unit, said they are forced to place multiple newborns in the same incubator because the small number of doctors cannot handle the overwhelming number of patients. Another doctor, Assad Atiyyah al-Navajeeha, said the overcrowding poses serious health risks. Doctors put two or three babies in one incubator in the hospital. Navajeeha added that many pregnant women suffer from malnutrition and are unable to access regular checkups amid the ongoing conflict. In Gaza women either give birth prematurely or have miscarriages. As the number of premature births rises, the chances of survival for babies decrease in the city. He noted that the occupancy rate in the neonatal unit has reached 200% and that a three-day-old premature baby recently died due to overcrowding and a lack of medical equipment. Indirect talks between Hamas and Israel started in the Egyptian city on Monday to make progress on a 20-point Gaza ceasefire plan unveiled by US President Donald Trump. The plan includes the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, the end the of the war that has claimed more than 67,000 Palestinian lives since October 2023, governance of Gaza through a Palestinian committee and the enclave's rebuilding.
