Massive crocodile showcases feeding prowess as it eats hippo carcass
It was during mid-morning on a safari in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, that we stopped at a huge dam, searching for wildlife. The dam seemed to have a lot of hippos and crocodiles in it. In the far distance I spotted something weird looking on the water’s surface and there were movement and splashes of water. We decided to drive to the opposite side of the dam to take a closer look. When we got closer it, all became clear. It was a bloated hippo carcass floating on the water with a number of small sized crocodiles feeding on the carcass. The next moment, an absolute beast of a crocodile appeared on the scene to feed. This croc did not wait for any invitation. The smaller crocs moved away while this monster crocodile started feeding. Right then, I saw the ferocious feeding habits of such a massive killing machine. Chills were running down my spine watching this. The big croc shoved its head right into the carcass, ferociously ripping off big chunks of meat before lifting its head in true crocodile style, swallowing large chunks of meat in whole pieces. This event was proof once again that even though crocodiles are most likely the most formidable hunters in Africa, they would not think twice to scavenge as well. In the world of the crocodile, there is no discrimination when it comes to food. Meat is meat, no matter how old, no matter what type of meat and no matter how it is found. Scary stuff.
