Prof. Ayla Sevim Erol, head of the Anthropology Department at Ankara University’s Faculty of Language, History, and Geography, told Anadolu Agency that her team has been excavating in Cankırı for 24 years. She said one of the most remarkable finds of this year was the giraffe skull. Erol said we believe this was the first time such a complete skull has been found in Anatolia. The fossil was uncovered in a geological layer dated between 7 and 9 million years ago. She noted that it was possible to date it closer to 9 million years. Excavations at the Corakyerler Vertebrate Fossil Site have so far yielded 4,516 fossil remains, including teeth, pelvic bones, skulls, and other fragments from 43 different species — among them ancestors of horses, elephants, giraffes, saber-toothed cats, otters, porcupines, bears, pigs, and rhinoceroses.
