Starmer Meets Modi On First Visit To India Amid Trade Mission. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai on his first official visit to India. Starmer is leading the largest UK trade delegation ever, including over 100 CEOs, entrepreneurs, university vice-chancellors, and cultural leaders as part of a two-day mission to expand business and trade ties. The leaders discussed the landmark UK-India trade deal signed in July, which has already generated £1 billion in investment and nearly 7,000 jobs in the UK. The deal will cut India’s tariffs on UK products from 15% to 3% and reduce taxes on goods such as Scotch whisky, luxury cars, and medical devices while the UK lowers duties on Indian imports including clothing and jewellery. Starmer also met Nandan Nilekani, founder of India’s digital ID system, ahead of plans to introduce a compulsory digital ID in the UK to curb illegal work. In cultural news, three Bollywood films will be shot in the UK by Yash Raj Films from 2026, ending an eight-year hiatus.
