They offered it to us, but they deny it to Palestinians in the same prisons. So, the story is not about us. We always reiterate this. Obviously, there were violations, violations will be documented, and they will be reported in the same space.” 8. (SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) MEMBER OF THE FREEDOM FLOTILLA'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS, THIAGO ÁVILA, SAYING: “We always avoid talking about it because it's all about ‘tell your story,’ not about us. This mission shouldn’t even exist. This mission only exists because Palestinians are subjected to conditions that no human being should endure.” 9. VARIOUS OF ACTIVISTS AND SUPPORTERS CHANTING SLOGANS, SOME KNEELING ON FLOOR, POSING FOR PHOTO TOGETHER SAO PAULO, BRAZIL - OCTOBER 9: Thirteen Brazilian activists detained by Israel during a humanitarian flotilla mission to Gaza arrived home on Thursday, Oct. 9, where they were met with emotional reunions at Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo. The activists were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy of ships carrying international activists and aid that set sail from Barcelona on August 31. The mission was aimed at breaking the long-standing Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip. Last week, Israeli naval forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters, detaining hundreds of participants. The group included figures such as Federal Deputy Luizianne Lins and Thiago Ávila, a member of the flotilla's board of directors. Speaking to reporters, Ávila focused less on his own detention and more on the conditions faced by Palestinians. "We always emphasize the way we were treated in prison, and the way we were treated is always far inferior to the way Palestinians are treated in these same prisons," Ávila stated. He described the facilities as places where "Palestinians are tortured, murdered, and have all their rights violated." Another activist, Ariadne Telles, connected the Palestinian cause to broader struggles against colonialism and imperialism. Federal Deputy Luizianne Lins described the group's release and transfer from Israeli custody, noting they were separated into different vehicles in a convoy under heavy military escort. The Brazilian contingent was among 470 activists from 47 countries participating in the effort. Israel, as the occupying power, has previously attacked several Gaza-bound ships, seized their cargo and deported activists on board. It has maintained a blockade on Gaza, home to nearly 2.4 million people, for nearly 18 years and tightened the siege in March when it closed border crossings and blocked food and medicine deliveries, pushing the enclave into famine. Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed more than 67,000 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it uninhabitable. A ceasefire agreement is set to start on Thursday to end two years of Israeli bombardment on the enclave. Writing by Sibel Uygun
