Police probe mystery death of Thai masseuse found dead at spa in Japan
Thai police are probing the mystery death of a masseuse who was found dead in Japan.
Nongnapat Nanongtoom, 47, was discovered naked lying facedown on a table at the massage parlour in Yuki City, Ibaraki Prefecture.
The breadwinner had been working at the shop for just six months to support her family before her unclothed body was found on Sunday, on October 5.
Thai authorities were investigating her death after her daughter, Kanyawi, 20, sought help from the legal charity, Pavena Foundation for Children and Women, believing the overseas worker had been murdered.
A grieving Kanyawi said she grew worried when her mother suddenly stopped replying on October 5, despite their daily chats on the LINE application.
She said: 'I asked the shop owner, but she claimed to know nothing and refused to tell me anything. I posted online looking for my mother, and that's when someone told me she had died on October 5, naked inside the shop.
'I don't understand why the owner hid the truth and wouldn't speak. I'm asking the Pavena Foundation to help find out what really happened to my mother, catch whoever was responsible, and bring her body home to Thailand.
'After this, I don't know how I will live or if I will be able to finish university because of the tuition expenses. Now that I don't have my mother, I worry that I have no future, and I barely want to keep living.'
Foundation president Pavena Hongsakul said she has contacted police in Thailand along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate with the Japanese police and the Thai Embassy in Japan.
Footage shows the charity founder consoling Kanyawi, seen in the video wearing a blue hoodie, a blue cap, and a mask to conceal her face.
Kanyawi said her divorced mother had supported the family by running a tea shop that later closed due to financial troubles. She then learned Thai massage and was invited to work at the seedy Nana Thai Spa in Japan to help fund her daughter's medical studies.
Recalling their last conversation, Kanyawi said her mother had recounted being strangled by a male Japanese customer before she lost contact.
She said the shop owner had lied, claiming Nongnapat had gone out with a man when she was actually already dead. The shop's website, which featured women in revealing clothes, was later taken offline.
The university student continued: 'I had only a single mother in my life who always loved and supported me. Now that she is gone, I don't know how to live. I need to know the true cause of my mother's death.
She died naked on a massage bed in the shop, which is very unusual, especially since she had no illnesses before. Now I don't know who to turn to. Only the Pavena Foundation has been a source of refuge and assistance.
‘I am also asking for help from kind-hearted people to donate to help bring my mother's body back to Thailand for the funeral. Once the necessary amount of money has been reached, I will immediately close the account.'
Pavena has vowed to have Nongnapat's body repatriated and have her death investigated. She also promised to support Kanyawi's education to ensure she is able to complete her studies.
She said: 'Any person wishing to support may contact the foundation directly. These problems are ultimately caused by poverty. Due to the poor economic climate, many Thai women are considering working abroad, often in poor conditions.'
