Philippines earthquake jolts school building forcing pupil evacuations
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake sparked pupil evacuations as it jolted a school building in the Philippines.
Footage shows schoolchildren fleeing to the courtyard of the Sultan Kudarat Islamic School in Maguindanao del Norte after the quake rattled their classrooms.
Officials warned that aftershocks were expected. There was also a tsunami warning issued, with large waves expected across the region, including in neighbouring Indonesia.
State seismological agency PHIVOLCS reported that the offshore earthquake struck 44 kilometres (27 miles) northeast of Manay town in Davao Oriental province at 9:43 am local time. It was recorded offshore at a depth of 20 kilometres (12 miles).
Intensity V was felt in the commercial centre of Davao City, while Intensity IV was felt in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.
PHIVOLCS said damage and aftershocks were expected.
Residents in coastal areas were advised to immediately evacuate as a tsunami warning was raised.
PHIVOLCS said: 'Based on the local tsunami scenario database, it is expected to experience wave heights of more than one meter above the normal tides and may be higher on enclosed bays and straits.
'It is forecasted that the first tsunami waves will arrive between 09:43:54 to 11:43:54, 10 Oct 2025 (PST). These waves may continue for hours.'
The powerful tremor came a week after another deadly earthquake that killed at least 74 people in Cebu province, central Philippines.
The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes happen.
