This is the dramatic moment a tornado ripped the roofs from homes in Guatemala.

Footage shows a funnel cloud building in the sky, gradually sending debris flying through the air as lightning flashes in the background over Guatemala City on October 9.

The freak weather phenomenon was spotted in several areas, including zones 11 and 12 of the capital.

Local media said the storm brought down trees, tore off roofs, and damaged power lines. No injuries were reported.

A tornado forms when warm, moist air meets cool, dry air during severe storms, creating a spinning funnel that becomes a tornado once it touches the ground.

Often linked to violent storms like supercells, tornadoes can cause severe damage alongside heavy rain, strong winds, thunder, and lightning.
