UNCAPTIONED: László Krasznahorkai Wins Nobel Prize in Literature
László Krasznahorkai Wins Nobel Prize in Literature. László Krasznahorkai has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his visionary works amidst apocalyptic themes. The Hungarian author was praised for his compelling oeuvre, which reaffirms the power of art in times of terror. Krasznahorkai, born in 1954, has written five novels and received several prestigious literary awards, including the 2015 Man Booker International Prize. His first novel Satantango (1985) is a postmodern exploration of the end of the world, later adapted into a seven-hour film by Béla Tarr. In 2002, Imre Kertész became the first Hungarian author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and Krasznahorkai is the second to receive the honor. Other notable works by Krasznahorkai include The Melancholy of Resistance (1989), War and War (1999), and Seiobo There Below (2008). His 2021 novel Herscht 07769 portrays social unrest in Germany and is regarded as a significant contemporary German novel. In Herscht 07769, the plot revolves around Florian Herscht, an orphan involved in neo-Nazi circles, and his struggle with social anarchy in Thüringen. His recent satirical novel Zsömle Odavan centers on 91-year-old Uncle Józsi Kada, who harbors a secret claim to a throne while choosing to live in obscurity. The Nobel committee described Krasznahorkai as a great epic writer, drawing comparisons to Kafka and Thomas Bernhard for his absurdist, grotesque style.
