Austria: Vienna protesters demand sanctions on Israel
SHOTLIST: VIENNA, AUSTRIA (OCT. 11, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. VARIOUS OF PROTESTERS MARCHING, CHANTING SLOGANS, HOLDING PALESTINIAN FLAGS AND BANNERS 2. CATHOLIC PRIEST FRANZ SIEDER DELIVERING SPEECH 3. UNIONIST AXEL MAGNUS DELIVERING SPEECH VIENNA, AUSTRIA - OCT. 11: Thousands of pro-Palestine supporters in Austria’s capital, Vienna, staged a demonstration on Saturday, Oct. 11, calling for an end to what they described as Israel’s genocide in Gaza and for sanctions to be imposed on Israel. The protest, jointly organized by more than 50 civil society organizations in Vienna, drew thousands of pro-Palestine demonstrators. Carrying Palestinian flags, protesters chanted slogans such as “Boycott Israel” and “Europe funds, Israel bombs.” They also held banners reading “Stop the genocide in Gaza — sanctions now” and “Austria, you can’t hide, you’re supporting genocide.” Thousands of demonstrators marched to the street where the buildings of the Prime Ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Presidency are located, calling there for an end to the genocide in Gaza and for sanctions on Israel. Catholic priest Franz Sieder said in his speech that Palestinians have been subjected to inhumane treatment for decades and have been virtually enslaved. Sieder said he considers Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu one of the greatest criminals of our time and expressed that he has killed 60,000 people, including 20,000 children. He added that this is a horrific crime, and as the Austrian government we should be truly ashamed for remaining silent on this. Sieder expressed satisfaction with the cease-fire reached in Gaza and stressed that Palestinians must have democratic and social fundamental rights. Unionist Axel Magnus criticized the government’s pro-Israel policy, saying while so-called neutral Austria remains silent about the genocide in Gaza, Prime Minister Christian Stocker and Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger run around attending international drone and armament conferences, burying the last remnants of neutrality in Austria. Magnus said Austria is a country that profits from wars and is in no way neutral. Reporting by Salih Okuroglu // Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
