CROWD BEHIND ONE OF AMBULANCES PARKED ON ROAD GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - OCTOBER 11: The human cost of the recent conflict in Gaza was further underscored on Saturday, Oct. 11, with the discovery of a skull and bone fragments in the debris of a heavily damaged neighborhood, following the withdrawal of Israeli forces. Civil Defense teams in Gaza located the remains in the Al-Maghraqa area during initial inspections after the Israeli military pulled back. The discovery came as a truce, which took effect after a period of intense Israeli strikes, and offered the first clear view of the widespread devastation across the coastal enclave. The scale of the destruction is vast, with entire districts reduced to rubble and cratered roads making movement difficult. The current pause in hostilities is part of a ceasefire deal announced on Wednesday. The agreement envisions a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip. A proposed second phase of the plan outlines the establishment of a new governing mechanism in Gaza without the participation of Hamas and the formation of a new security force. The conflict, which began in October 2023, has resulted in the deaths of nearly 67,200 Palestinians in the enclave, the vast majority of them women and children, according to Palestinian health authorities. The extensive bombardment and ground offensive have left the territory largely uninhabitable. Writing by Sibel Uygun
