VARIOUS OF CITIZENS CASTING THEIR VOTEPRISHTINA, KOSOVO - OCTOBER 12: In the Balkan country of Kosovo, the voters head to the polls to elect their mayors and municipal council members on Oct. 12. Voting began at 7:00 a.m. local time Sunday. The 2,069,098 registered voters will be able to cast their ballots at 2,625 polling stations set up in 948 centers until 7:00 p.m. local time. 43,993 voters living outside Kosovo also registered to cast their ballots by mail. In this country, where local elections are held every four years, voters will elect 38 mayors and municipal council members. A total of 5,626 candidates are running in the elections, 206 for mayor and the rest for municipal council member. Meanwhile, elections in four municipalities in northern Kosovo, where Serbs are in the majority, have particular importance due to tensions between Serbian and Albanian communities in the region for recent years. The Kosovo Central Election Commission (KQZ) is expected to announce its unofficial preliminary results before midnight. The last local elections in the Balkan country of Kosovo were held in 2021.
