4. VARIOUS OF HEAVILY DAMAGED AL-QUDS OPEN UNIVERSITY BUILDING AND PALESTINIANS AROUND GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - OCT. 12: The Israeli army heavily destroyed the Al-Quds Open University building in Gaza City’s northern Nasr neighborhood, rendering the educational facility unusable.
The army, which had used the university building as a military post during its offensive on the Gaza Strip, destroyed it completely before withdrawing from the area, further targeting Gaza’s educational infrastructure.
UN figures show that 17,237 students, 1,271 university students and 967 educational staff were killed in Israeli attacks.
According to Gaza’s Education Ministry, more than 25,700 students and 3,100 teachers were injured. Sixty three university buildings were also destroyed.
With most education disrupted, nearly 660,000 children remain out of school, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, or UNRWA.
OCHA reported that 97% of school buildings were partially or completely damaged.
Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed over 67,600 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it uninhabitable.
Trump announced Wednesday that Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a 20-point plan he laid out Sept. 29 to bring a ceasefire to Gaza, release all Israeli captives being held there in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip. The first phase of the deal came into force on Friday.
A second phase of the plan calls for the establishment of a new governing mechanism in Gaza without Hamas’ participation, the formation of a multinational force, and the disarmament of Hamas.
