Storyline: China debuts world's mightiest centrifuge, unleashing ultra-intense gravity [Voice_over] Scientists in east China's Zhejiang Province have just launched what's being called the world's largest centrifuge by capacity, CHIEF1300. The centrifuge will be a key part of the Centrifugal Hypergravity and Interdisciplinary Experiment Facility, or CHIEF, which is still under construction. Scientists say the machine can generate 300 times the Earth's gravity with a 20 ton load and is already conducting experiments. In one case, an earthquake was simulated to test the foundation of a hydropower dam, and in another, a 20-meter tsunami was recreated to test the seabed foundation of offshore wind turbines. Hyper-gravity is defined as any gravitational force stronger than the Earth's. For example, on a roller-coaster, riders briefly endure 2Gs, or twice the Earth's gravity, when they feel pressed against their seats after an upsidedown loop. By contrast, the CHIEF1300 is engineered to sustain 1,500G's according to its designers. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
