VARIOUS OF DEBRIS AND POLLUTION SCATTERED IN STREETS FOLLOWING TYPHOONSTHAI NGUYEN, VIETNAM - OCT. 14: Cleanup efforts were underway Tuesday, Oct. 14, in homes and businesses damaged by floods in the city of Thai Nguyen, one of the areas hardest hit by Typhoons Matmo and Bualoi. Floodwaters rose to the first floors of buildings, leaving houses and shops blanketed in mud. Flooding remains in 33 communes affecting 5,455 households in Thai Nguyen, and in three communes affecting 1,034 households in neighboring Lang Son. Nearly 15,000 hectares of rice fields and crops were inundated and damaged, according to authorities. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has allocated 140 billion VND ($5.3 million) from the 2025 central budget contingency fund to support the four affected northern provinces. Earlier in the day, Australia announced that it is providing up to AUD$3 million ($1.95 million) in humanitarian assistance to Vietnam following Typhoons Bualoi and Matmo. The aid package will include emergency relief supplies such as kitchen kits, hygiene kits and shelter tool kits, said Foreign Minister Penny Wong in a joint statement with Minister for International Development Anne Aly. Typhoon Bualoi and Matmo caused a huge amount of destruction in Vietnam in late September and early October, with the two storms leaving over 80 people dead or missing. More than 200 homes were destroyed and another 169,000 sustained damage or lost their roofing. Thousands of hectares of cultivated fields and aquaculture were also destroyed and more than 180,000 livestock and poultry killed.
