This is the dramatic moment a fairground ride collapsed, injuring 10 people at a festival in Indonesia.

Villagers were on the spinning attraction called 'Ombak Banyu' or 'water waves' when the machine gave way on Saturday evening.

Footage shows locals sitting on the ride's circular frame while staff members manually push it to generate a spinning motion.

As the mechanism moved up and down to mimic the motion of ocean waves, the central supporting pillar suddenly detached from the ground with a loud crack.

Horrified onlookers screamed as the machine toppled over, causing several riders to fall to the ground.

Authorities said 10 injured individuals were rescued from the Kaliboto Village Night Market in Purworejo Regency, Central Java. They were treated at a clinic and are out of danger.

Syamsudin, head of the Kaliboto Kulon hamlet, said: 'The cause is that the support pillar for the axle collapsed. It was suspected to be caused by a broken bolt, which triggered the collapse of the main pillar.'

AKP Catur Agus Yudo, head of the Purworejo Police Criminal Investigation Unit, said all 10 wounded people suffered only minor injuries, including sprains and abrasions.

He added: 'From this incident, ten visitors who were riding the ride suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the Bener Community Health Centre. No one was hospitalised. All were allowed to go home.'

Officials did not clarify if the ride operators would face sanctions for the collapse.

Syamsudin said: 'The operator gave me his cell phone number so that if there were any further problems, I could contact them directly.'
