Trump Forced to Backtrack on Summit Invite After Erdoğan’s Ultimatum. Donald Trump made a last-minute decision to invite Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to a Gaza peace summit in Egypt. Turkish President Erdoğan warned he would not land in Sharm el-Sheikh if Netanyahu attended the summit. The invitation to Netanyahu was reportedly arranged during a phone call between Trump and Egyptian President Sisi. While flying over Egypt, Erdoğan directly communicated his objections to Sisi from his plane. Netanyahu later declined the invitation, officially citing the event’s closeness to a Jewish holiday. Members of Netanyahu’s far-right coalition threatened to resign if he participated in the summit. Netanyahu’s attendance would have been controversial due to active ICC arrest warrants over alleged Gaza war crimes.
