UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on Monday hailed China's role in advancing the global cause of women, saying the country's progress on gender equality gives hope to those who feel left behind. Amina Mohammed was in China's capital city Beijing for the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. At the opening ceremony on Monday morning, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote address, proposing joint efforts in fostering an enabling environment for women's growth and development. Amina Mohammed and other international guests also delivered speeches. Talking to China Global Television Network (CGTN), the UN official emphasized the importance of the grand gathering. Warning that there is still a lot of work to be done to advance women's cause, Amina Mohammed commended China's efforts to promote gender equality, in a way which can inspire other countries. It's a world where the geopolitical tensions have caused a lot of damage to multilateralism. And the idea that we are better together, and bringing women together to celebrate what was quite momentous in 1995, and to say 'well, we did well, we're not there yet, and we still have a way to go', and that recommitment." But I think we have an even bigger role to see China play at the country level. If I have to think back 30 years, what China is today does give a lot of hope for, I think, for many countries around the world who feel like they've been left behind, that it is possible to do things in a big way. It is possible to bring so many hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, access to education, women in the workforce. And therefore you can do so much more. I think that's important."; [SHOTS OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] FILE: China - Date Unknown 6. African women visiting library in China; FILE: Date and Location Unknown 7. Women posing for photos at port; 8.
