Protesters carried Palestinian flags and banners reading “Free Palestine,” “Boycott Israel,” and “Genocidal Israel.” Chants of “Freedom for Palestine” and “Show Israel the red card” echoed through the city as participants called for Israel to be banned from international sporting events over its genocide in Gaza. An 18-meter Palestinian flag and a large red banner bearing the slogan “Show Israel the Red Card” led the procession. Some demonstrators carried a symbolic shroud, 23 meters long and seven meters wide, covered with the handwritten names of more than 18,000 children killed by Israel in Gaza. The march began in Piazza della Repubblica and ended at Piazza Primo Maggio, but tensions rose when a group attempted to move toward the Bluenergy Stadium, where the match was being held. Police blocked the roads leading to the stadium, sparking clashes. Security forces used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd, and some officers were seen striking protesters with batons. Several people were detained, and according to Italy’s ANSA news agency, one journalist was injured in the head during the confrontation. Andrea, a participant in the protest, told Anadolu that the demonstration was not directed against football itself but against the normalization of Israel’s policies. “We are here because we believe no match should be played with a state that represents apartheid and genocide. What we’re witnessing in Palestine, especially Gaza, didn’t begin on October 7, this genocide has been ongoing for years,” Andrea said. He added that the group’s demand was clear: “We don’t want these policies legitimized through sports. Israel must be expelled from all sporting competitions, especially FIFA and UEFA tournaments.” Andrea expressed his support for the “Show Israel the Red Card” campaign, vowing to continue demonstrations “until Palestine is free.” “A peace agreement does not mean freedom for the Palestinian people,” he said.
