Germany: Protesters in Berlin oppose crackdown on pro-Palestinian academics, artists
SHOTLIST: BERLIN, GERMANY (OCT. 15, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. VARIOUS OF DEMONSTRATORS GATHERING TO PROTEST AGAINST RESTRICTIONS ON PRO-PALESTINIAN ACADEMICS AND ARTISTS / PROTESTERS HOLDING FLAGS, BANNERS AND POSTERS, LISTENING TO SPEECHES, AND CHANTING SLOGANS 2. ONE MALE DEMONSTRATOR GEORG ISMAEL SPEAKING TO REPORTER (German) BERLIN, GERMANY - OCT. 15: Protesters gathered in Berlin on Wednesday, Oct. 15, to denounce restrictions on pro-Palestinian academics and artists, accusing authorities and institutions of silencing dissenting voices over the Gaza war. The protesters called on German institutions to end cooperation with Israeli organizations and demanded an end to Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian territories. Carrying Palestinian flags and photos of scientists killed by Israel, the crowd chanted slogans criticizing the German government for supplying weapons to Israel. The demonstration, which was attended by a large police presence, ended without incident. Germany announced on Friday it will support the Gaza plan with strong financial and technical assistance but will not commit troops to the planned international security force. In a statement from his press office, Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the ceasefire deal between the Palestinian group Hamas and Israel, and thanked US President Donald Trump and regional actors Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye for their efforts. Last week, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of a plan he laid out on Sept. 29 to bring a ceasefire to Gaza, release all Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip. The first phase of the deal came into force on Friday. Phase two of the plan calls for the establishment of a new governing mechanism in Gaza, without Hamas’ participation, the formation of a multinational force, and the disarmament of Hamas. Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed nearly 68,000 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it largely uninhabitable.
