British tourist rescued from holiday sea trip horror as rogue waves capsizes boat in Bali
A British tourist was rescued from a holiday sea trip gone wrong as a rogue wave capsized her boat in Bali.
Anah Inogen Joned, 47, was on a morning fishing excursion with local fisherman I Nyoman Juliantara, 33, when strong winds and waves battered their wooden boat off the resort island on Tuesday.
The pair were tossed overboard as a large swell upended the outrigger canoe, locally called a 'jukung', leaving them floating several hundred metres offshore in Karangasem Regency.
They were stranded for 15 minutes before a passing fisherman, Kadek Sudirta alias Bono, 36, found them clinging onto the overturned vessel. Seaside residents carried out a rescue after being notified through his Facebook broadcast.
Dramatic footage shows locals securing the capsized boat with ropes as gales whipped across the waters. The rescued British woman and fisherman were seen sitting safe on another boat.
Made Suparwata, head of Bunutan village, said: 'The waves came out of nowhere. It happened so quickly. They had no time to react before the boat overturned.
'Fortunately, other fishermen were close enough to notice the incident. They worked together to bring both the local fisherman and the British tourist to safety.'
Anah and Juliantara were returned to shore unharmed at 1:33 pm local time. The holidaymaker was reported to have been staying at the Blue Star Purwakerti Hotel.
The village head warned: 'We appeal to all fishermen to be careful and always pay attention to the weather forecast. The recent sea weather has been erratic and high-risk.'
