Big elephant herd causes huge roadblock on main road in Kruger National Park
It was around midday when I entered the Kruger National Park through one of their main entrance gates, then following one of the busiest tourist routes in the park while on my way home. It wasn’t even a kilometer into the park when I suddenly noticed a whole lot of vehicles piled up in the far distance. In front of all the vehicles, who were on their way out of the park, a big herd of elephants was causally walking down the main road. The elephants walked side by side, blocking the whole main road from side to side. Once you enter the park, the rule is that all animals always have the first right of way. With elephants you are forced to obey to this rule, otherwise you and your vehicle will come second. While the traffic on the opposite side couldn’t do much but wait, me and another few vehicles coming in had the elephants coming straight our way. This forced all of us to start our vehicles and start reversing. In front of us was a low water bridge which the elephants clearly wanted to use to cross a deep dry drainage line. Once over the bridge, the elephant herd slowly got off the road one by one, back into the bush on their way to a water source. While it is intimidating to have such giants coming towards you down a main road, it was still spectacular to see how these elephants demanded respect and right of way, no matter what vehicle you are in. The traffic was blocked up for a good twenty minutes to half an hour before we all could slowly get back on the road and continue our journeys.
