China: China's 'Chili City' finds the spice of life in chili processing industry
Storyline: China's 'Chili City' finds the spice of life in chili processing industry [Voice_over] Known as Chili City, Zunyi of southwest China’s Guizhou Province is spicing up its chili production industry. At one chili pepper processing plant just outside of town, 16 production lines are humming with activity. From cleaning, fermentation, crushing and canning, chilies are turned into fragrant, spicy, and enticing chili products. [Sound_bite] Hu Guangfen, chairman, food company: "Our product line has evolved far beyond our original chili oil. We now offer a diverse range of over 180 products, which are already being exported to countries like Vietnam, Russia, the UK, and Spain." [Voice_over] Chili peppers from Zunyi are used in many more products beyond the dining table. Some chili enterprises in the city specialize in deep processing to turn the vegetable into an ingredient used in everything from medicine to make-up. [Sound_bite] Liang Yongyue, General Manager, biotechnology company: "Exports now account for 75 percent of our total output. Our red pigment is primarily used in cosmetics, especially lipstick, with strong demand from the US, Germany, Japan, and South Korea. We also produce a high-grade capsaicin called capsaicinoid. In medicine, it's used in anesthetics, and in the military sector, it's added to marine paints." [Voice_over] Data shows that there are over 130 chili processing companies in Zunyi, with a combined annual production capacity of 400,000 tons. They’re primarily exported to countries and regions including Russia, the U.K., Mexico, and Southeast Asia. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
