China: Smart tech, efficient logistics help Yunnan flowers blossom into new markets
Storyline: Smart tech, efficient logistics help Yunnan flowers blossom into new markets [Voice_over] Fresh flowers from across southwest China's Yunnan Province are making a name for themselves on the international stage, driven by innovative agriculture technologies and efficient logistics. At one flower industrial park in Lijiang City, rows of roses, lilies, and carnations are grown inside state-of-the-art greenhouses, with integrated temperature controls and water-fertilizer systems. Meanwhile, in the province's Yao'an County, post-harvest processing has become scientific. Flowers are stored in a dormant state of between 5 to 8 degrees Celsius, then rehydrated in water to ensure they have a vase life of at least 10 days even after being transported. The flowers are sorted mechanically into more than two dozen quality grades. [Sound_bite] Duan Yunsheng, manager, fresh-cut flower enterprise: "By scanning each bloom for head size, color, openness, and stem length, we sort the flowers into 32 distinct quality grades. Our system can process around 10,000 stems per hour -- 30 percent more efficient than manual sorting by workers." [Voice_over] Every day, millions of stems from across the province are delivered to Asia's largest flower auction center-the Dounan Flower Market in Kunming, where traders buy and sell flowers in real time. Then they're shipped to destinations around the world from Kunming's dedicated cold-chain logistics hub for flowers. From Kazakhstan to Japan, wholesale buyers have great things to say about flowers from Yunnan. [Sound_bite] Maksim Popovnik, Kazakhstan wholesale flower buyer: "Flowers from Yunnan reach Astana in four to five days, and they're still incredibly fresh." [Sound_bite] Masaki Yoshigaki, Japanese flower distributor: "Shipments from Yunnan keep growing. We have high expectations for fresh-cut flowers from Yunnan." [Voice_over] There are over 20 counties across Yunnan province with fresh cut-flower industries. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
