Venezuela: Experts denounce US actions for undermining Venezuela’s national sovereignty
Storyline: Venezuelan politicians and experts convened a press conference in Caracas on Tuesday to denounce U.S. anti-drug operations as a pretext for meddling in domestic affairs and undermining national sovereignty. In recent weeks, the U.S. has struck alleged drug-trafficking boats operating in international waters near Venezuela, moves that Venezuelan officials interpret as efforts toward regime change and military expansion. At the conference hosted by Venezuela's National Council for Sovereignty and Peace, Secretary General Jorge Rodriguez accused the U.S. of using counter-narcotics operations as a pretext to impose sanctions and blockades, calling it an act of aggression built on falsehoods. "All these threats and invasions come from the strongest and most aggressive country in history. However, they are all based on lies, slanders and insults," said Rodriguez. Several participants warned that the U.S. is pursuing regime change through force, disguised as counter-narcotics operations. "Venezuela is now at war, it is not merely under threat and besieged. More than a decade of U.S. sanctions have inflicted incalculable harm on Venezuela and its people," said Luis Eduardo Martínez, deputy to Venezuela's National Assembly. "Since 2002, we've witnessed coups, street violence, interim government turmoil and subversive propaganda campaigns, which means as national sovereignty faces growing threats, everything we are experiencing is part of a new logic of warfare," said Oschar Schemel, a political analyst.
