GAZA, PALESTINE - OCTOBER 17, 2025: Following the Israeli army’s withdrawal from Gaza under a ceasefire deal, Palestinians living amid widespread destruction are struggling to access basic necessities.

Among them is Mohammad Najjar, who is trying to survive with his family amid the rubble of destroyed homes. He described their daily struggle to secure water and food, cope with the lack of safety, and endure the spread of pests and the constant fear that accompanies them at night.

Living in a tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in western Gaza, Najjar spoke of their desperation: “Our homes were completely destroyed. We had no money in our pockets and nowhere to go. We had to stay here.”

During the Israeli genocide, Najjar said he and his family first sought shelter from Jabalia to the Gaza coastline and later moved to the city center. “In the area where we were, we constantly heard the sounds of tanks and helicopter fire. We couldn’t go outside for days,” he said.

After the ceasefire, Najjar returned to his hometown and described the devastation: “Our village was completely destroyed. Even the water lines had been removed, and the infrastructure was entirely demolished.”

Highlighting the harsh winter conditions and lack of adequate shelters, Najjar added: “Finding water, cooking food, staying warm, every day is a separate struggle. But we are still alive. The people of Gaza are used to hardships and know how to survive.”

A ceasefire was reached last week between Israel and Hamas, based on a plan presented by US President Donald Trump.

Since October 2023, Israeli genocide has killed nearly 68,000 Palestinians in Gaza, most of them women and children, and left the besieged enclave largely uninhabitable, with homes destroyed and essential infrastructure in ruins.le.
