China: Guangzhou launches first low-altitude flight camp amid rising economic potential
Storyline: The fast-growing low-altitude economy is set to be taken to even greater heights in Guangzhou City of south China's Guangdong Province as the city launched its first-ever low-altitude flight camp on Thursday, seeking to tap into the vast potential of this fast emerging sector. Referring to activities involving both manned and unmanned aircraft operating in airspace ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 meters above the ground, the low-altitude economy has been recognized as a strategic emerging sector in China and its development is continuing to gather pace. The brand new flight camp in Guangzhou marks another step forward, paving the way for a broader range of application scenarios and a further formalization of the rapidly-growing industry which is continuing to hit new heights across the country. Several tech breakthroughs were showcased during Thursday's launch event held at the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center in the city's Panyu District, with a cargo drone performing a precise automated landing and delivery, while there was also a flight demonstration of the groundbreaking "Land Aircraft Carrier," the world's first mass-produced modular flying car developed by Chinese company XPENG AEROHT. The first phase of the newly inaugurated low-altitude flight camp spans an area of over 30,000 square meters, providing a platform for product displays, flight testing, education, and training in this evolving sector. "This camp will support product demonstrations, launches, operations, and after-sales services. It will help gather the best low-altitude products in Guangzhou and facilitate their global sale," said Yang Weixi, chairman and general manager of the Guangzhou Low-Altitude Economy Industry Development company. A total of 14 universities nationwide have signed cooperation agreements with the new flight camp, as it aims to become a center of excellence, from nurturing the next generation of drone pilots to advancing research and development in this fledging industry. "This platform enables collaboration among universities, industries, and investors," said Dai Qingyun, executive director of a sub branch focusing on smart travel under the Regional University–Industry Technology Transfer Center (Greater Bay Area). Two planned low-altitude routes were also unveiled at the event, one of which will foster cultural tourism along the Pearl River Delta in southern China, while the other is designed to carry out intelligent logistics operations, as the sector opens up more new avenues for economic growth in the skies. According to forecasts from the country's civil aviation authority, the total scale of China's low-altitude economy is expected to top 3.5 trillion yuan (almost 500 billion U.S. dollars) by 2035, highlighting its massive market potential.
