The business group said the charge would make the programme “cost-prohibitive” for employers and harm American competitiveness. President Trump introduced the fee through an executive order last month, claiming the visa system had been abused and undercut US workers. The White House defended the measure as a “lawful and necessary step” toward wider reforms. Tech leaders including Elon Musk, Satya Nadella, and Sundar Pichai, all of whom began their US careers on H-1B visas, have criticised the move, saying it limits access to global talent. Meanwhile, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said “all the big companies” support the fee.
