A rare Sumatran tiger was caught on CCTV roaming inside the compound of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in Agam, West Sumatra, on October 15, 2025 — a high-altitude research station that monitors atmospheric and space activities.
The tiger appeared around 1:30 a.m. local time, walking through the office yard before vanishing into nearby bushes. The sighting prompted the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of West Sumatra to declare an emergency alert (Siaga Satu) and deploy a field team to handle the situation.
According to Ade Putra, head of the Maninjau Conservation Resort II, the team was immediately sent to secure the area and prevent human-wildlife conflict.
Following the alert, all staff at BRIN and the nearby Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) observatory were instructed to work from home. Local farmers have also stayed away from their fields for safety reasons, raising concerns over potential crop losses.
The incident has alarmed residents and researchers alike, underscoring the ongoing tension between endangered wildlife and human activity in West Sumatra’s upland region.
