Flames erupted in the overhead compartment mid-air when a lithium battery exploded on a packed flight.

The Airbus A320 operated by Air China was flying from Shanghai to the Incheon International Airport, near Seoul, South Korea, when the fire started.

Footage shows flames tearing through the hat rack as terrified passengers and crew scramble to contain the blaze on flight CA139 on Saturday.

The airline said in a statement: 'A lithium battery spontaneously ignited in a passenger's carry-on luggage stored in the overhead bin on flight CA139.

'The crew immediately handled the situation according to procedures, and no one was injured.'

Flight records show the aircraft was diverted to the Shanghai Pudong International Airport in China for an emergency landing.

Several airlines have banned passengers from having any devices containing lithium batteries in their checked luggage.
