VARIOUS OF RELATIVES MOURNING AND BIDDING FAREWELL TO JOURNALIST GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - OCT. 20: A funeral prayer was held on Monday, Oct. 20, outside Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah for Palestinian journalist Ahmad Abu Mutair, who was killed when Israeli forces struck a building in the Al-Zawaida area of central Gaza.

Ahmad Abu Mutair, who worked for PMP Media, was among several journalists covering developments in the area when the strike occurred.

Fellow journalist Bashir Jaber said Abu Mutair’s death adds another name to the growing list of journalists killed during Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza.

Calling on local and international media organizations and human rights groups to take action, Jaber added, “Israel must be held accountable for its crimes against the press.”

The new fatality brought the number of Palestinian journalists killed since October 2023 to 249, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office.

On Sept. 29, US President Donald Trump publicly presented a 20-point peace plan for Gaza, which included an immediate ceasefire and the phased release of hostages and prisoners.

Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas both agreed to the first phase of the deal, with formal signing on Oct. 9. The deal was brokered with the help of mediators from the US, Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye. The ceasefire came into effect on Oct. 10.

Since October 2023, Israel’s genocidal war has killed more than 68,000 people and injured more than 170,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The Israeli military killed dozens of Palestinians in new attacks on Sunday after accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire, which the group has denied.

Trump said the ceasefire in Gaza is still in effect.
