Thousands of vehicles crowded a toll station at the end of the holiday week in China - causing a sea of read break lights to illuminate the night sky.

Footage shows long lines of cars jamming the Wu Zhuang Toll Station as the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays drew to a close in Chuzhou, Anhui Province.

Families returning home after the eight-day 'Golden Week' holiday travelled along major expressways, passing through the 36-lane toll station, which operated in both directions to handle the surge in vehicles coming from central and western regions.

In an aerial clip, red and white lights from the vehicles twinkled across the night scene amid the post-holiday travel rush on October 12.

Guan Xudong, the station manager of Wutong Company's Chuzhou Management Centre, said: 'The traffic volume reached around 120,000 vehicles, far exceeding normal levels.'
