On October 18, 2025, thousands of demonstrators marched from Marble Arch to Whitehall in London to protest the government’s proposed “BritCard” digital ID system. Protesters voiced concerns over privacy violations and potential mass surveillance. The system, planned to become mandatory by 2029 for verifying work eligibility, has faced strong opposition — with more than 2.8 million signatures collected against it and around 50 Labour MPs expressing dissent. Authorities maintain the initiative will help prevent illegal employment and enhance public service efficiency.
