ONE OF PROTESTERS, KOJO ACHEAMPONG, SPEAKING TO REPORTER (English)BOSTON, US - OCT. 21: Members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and Boston Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) protested Tuesday, Oct. 21, outside the hearing of Turkish student Rumeysa Ozturk, who was detained in March after co-authoring an op-ed criticizing Israel’s Gaza assault. Ozturk, a Fulbright scholar and PhD student in child development at Tufts University, was arrested by plainclothes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who surrounded her outside her Somerville, Massachusetts home on March 25, an incident captured on video. Her student visa was revoked by the State Department and she was sent to an ICE detention center in Louisiana, where she spent six weeks, before a federal judge in Vermont ordered her release on May 9, citing her asthma and a lack of justification for her continued detention. Though Ozturk was released in May, the hearing determines whether or not she will retain her right to work as a PhD student in the city of Somerville, Massachusetts.
