Onagers seen inside Vienna Zoo for the first time
This is the moment onagers were seen at Vienna Zoo for the first time, marking a milestone in the zoo's conservation efforts.
Two mares, a rare subspecies of the Asian wild ass, have arrived from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands through the European Endangered Species Programme.
A third mare and a stallion are expected to join them by early November to complete the breeding group.
Zoo Director Dr Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck said: 'These fascinating wild asses are very dear to my heart. Onagers are threatened with extinction. Their original range is now limited to a protected area in southern Iran. Competition with farm animals for scarce water has increasingly decimated the wild population.'
The most recent census in 2023 recorded fewer than 720 adult onagers remaining in the wild.
Vienna Zoo has recreated a steppe landscape similar to the species' natural habitat. The enclosure features compacted soil to promote natural hoof wear, circular runs to allow mares to move freely, and shaded areas with ponds, troughs, shrubs, and trees for comfort and protection.
Footage shows the two animals exploring their new surroundings, grazing on grass, and drinking from a pond.
Curator Rupert Kainradl said onagers adapt well to Austria's climate, as they are accustomed to wide temperature fluctuations in their native range, needing only shelter during rain or cold weather.
These wild donkeys are known for their resilience and speed, reaching up to 80 km/h, making them among the fastest equines.
Visitors can now see these rare creatures roaming freely through Vienna Zoo for the first time.
