This is the terrifying moment a magnitude 5.9 earthquake rattled a home as terrified residents fled in Costa Rica.

CCTV footage captured two locals seated outside their house when the tremors struck on Tuesday night, at around 9:57 pm local time, at a depth of 31 km.

Officials from the US Geological Survey recorded the quake at 3:57 am UTC on Wednesday, with the epicentre located 7 km south-southwest of the coastal town of Quepos.

There were no immediate reports of damage.
