UNCAPTIONED: Trump Pushes Forward With $10 Billion Lawsuit Over Wall Street Journal's Epstein Story
Trump Pushes Forward With $10 Billion Lawsuit Over Wall Street Journal’s Epstein Story. President Donald Trump’s lawyers asked a Florida judge to reject the Wall Street Journal’s bid to dismiss his $10 billion defamation suit over a story about a letter allegedly written for Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th birthday book. In a late Monday filing, Trump’s legal team accused the Journal, Dow Jones, and News Corp of running a “deliberate smear campaign” meant to subject the president to “public hatred and ridicule.” The lawsuit stems from a July report describing a bawdy letter purportedly from Trump that appeared in Epstein’s 2003 birthday book, which surfaced among records released by the House Oversight Committee. Trump has denied writing the letter, calling it fake and insisting the signature was forged. His lawyers said the Journal’s story “recklessly portrayed” the letter as genuine. The Wall Street Journal has defended its reporting, arguing that Trump’s prior acknowledgment of knowing Epstein makes the claim non-defamatory. Trump’s team contends the outlet showed “actual malice” by including his denial in a way that, they allege, cast doubt on its truthfulness.
