VARIOUS OF ISRAELI SOLDIERS AND PALESTINIAN FARMERS AROUNDHEBRON, PALESTINE - OCT. 23: Israeli soldiers and settlers prevented Palestinian farmers from harvesting their olive orchards in Hebron, in the occupied West Bank, on Thursday, Oct. 23. The Israeli army declared the area a “military zone,” blocking Palestinians from entering their fields. Local residents, who rely heavily on olive cultivation for their livelihoods, said they have been denied access to lands near illegal Israeli settlements since Oct. 7, 2023. Palestinian farmer Muhammed Tarwa said about 90% of the olive trees in the area had been burned or stripped of their fruit by settlers. According to Muayyar Shaaban, head of the Palestinian Authority’s Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, 158 settler attacks have been recorded since the start of the olive harvest season in October. Field teams also documented 17 incidents involving Israeli soldiers, including physical assaults, arrests, movement restrictions, denial of access, intimidation, harassment, and gunfire. Shaaban said 56 of the attacks occurred in the northern city of Nablus, 51 in the central city of Ramallah, and 15 in Hebron in the southern West Bank. He added that 57 incidents involved movement restrictions and intimidation against olive pickers, while 22 cases included beatings and other physical assaults. A total of 795 olive trees were destroyed in 74 attacks directly targeting farmland, Shaaban said, describing this year’s harvest as “one of the most difficult and dangerous in decades” due to rising violence by Israeli forces and settlers. He accused Israel of “systematically targeting the olive harvest season” because of the deep emotional and historical bond between Palestinians and their land, calling it part of “a clear and declared plan to control Palestinian geography and deny Palestinians access to their lands.” On Tuesday, Agriculture Minister Rezq Salimia said in a press conference held at the ministry’s headquarters in Ramallah since the beginning of 2025 through mid-October, “more than 5,353 farmers were affected by Israeli violations, marking a 17% increase compared with last year. He noted that total losses “exceeded $70.3 million, including the burning and uprooting of trees, destruction of agricultural infrastructure, killing and theft of livestock, confiscation of tens of thousands of dunams of land, and preventing farmers from accessing them while allowing systematic settler grazing.” Since October 2024, the ministry has documented the destruction of more than 15,000 olive trees, according to Salimia. Israeli attacks have escalated across the West Bank since October 2023, killing more than 1,056 Palestinians, injuring 10,300, and detaining over 20,000 others, according to Palestinian sources. In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Since October 2023, Israel’s genocidal war has killed over 68,000 people and injured more than 170,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. A ceasefire deal took effect on Oct. 10 in Gaza, based on a phased plan presented by US President Donald Trump. Reporting by Qais Omar Darwesh Omar, Halime Afra Aksoy / Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
