GAZA, PALESTINE (OCTOBER 24, 2025: Civil defense teams in the Gaza Strip have reburied the bodies of more than 120 Palestinians who were killed in Israeli attacks two years ago and initially laid to rest in a farmland used as a temporary burial site amid the Israeli genocide in the besieged enclave.

The victims were among those killed on November 17, 2023, when Israeli airstrikes targeted a residential building belonging to the Shuhaibar family in the Sabra neighborhood of northern Gaza City. The attack claimed the lives of more than 95 Palestinians, many of them displaced families who had sought refuge in the area, while others remained trapped beneath the rubble.

At the height of Israel’s assault, cemeteries across Gaza overflowed, with some completely destroyed, forcing families to bury their loved ones in courtyards, open lots, and agricultural fields. Two years later, as relative calm follows a newly declared ceasefire, relatives and rescue workers have begun transferring the bodies to a cemetery to grant them a proper and dignified burial.

The Gaza Endowments Ministry reported that more than half of the besieged territory’s 60 cemeteries had been struck, with 14 completely destroyed, leaving grieving families with almost no options for proper burials.

According to the Government Media Office in Gaza, 40 cemeteries were demolished, and over 2,450 bodies were taken from burial sites by Israeli forces. The office also reported that seven mass graves were opened inside hospitals to accommodate the mounting number of victims.

The first phase of US President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza ceasefire deal went into effect on Oct. 10. Phase one includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.

Since October 2023, the Israeli genocidal war has killed nearly 68,300 Palestinians in Gaza, most of them women and children, and rendered it largely uninhabitable.
