US, Los Angeles: Newport Beach Emergency Declared After Methane Seepage
Los Angeles, United States - October 23, 2025 10/23/2025 01:00 pm GMT-0700 NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – The city of Newport Beach has issued an emergency declaration and evacuated seven homes on Marcus Avenue, located on the Balboa Peninsula, following methane gas seepage associated with an old oil well capped in 1929. City officials reported that a homeowner first alerted authorities about oil seeping from her foundation in August. Since then, city crews have monitored gas levels in the area. This week, officials characterized recent methane readings as “very concerning.” The seepage is beneath a residence on Marcus Avenue, prompting fire officials to closely monitor the situation due to the potential for the gas to ignite.
